SUMMER 2017

PAID WORKING STUDENT (POSITION FILLED FOR 2017)

VOLUNTEER STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES (STILL AVAILABLE)

 Old Bull Farms,

has been developed over the last 20 years by husband and wife veterinarian team, Dr. Paul Johnston and Dr. Jeannine DeLuca.

We are always excited to hire and mentor at least one working student (paid job) along with one or two other summer student volunteers each summer. Please see our ad and peruse our website to find out if you might be a fit for for summer 2017.

We are now taking resumes for two student positions, a FULL TIME paid job, as well as a PART TIME volunteer position. These openings are great for energetic and enthusiastic young adults thinking about careers in any aspect of the equine industry. You will gain invaluable experience including exposure to the complex workings of a warmblood breeding farm, young horse training program, and veterinary medicine. You will also learn from a breeders perspective into the world of international show jumping, as well as insight into hunters and foxhunting. Summer students become part of our "farm family", and hopefully develop life long friendships at their "home away from home" here at OBF. We try our hardest to help prepare students for careers in veterinary medicine as well as other jobs in the equine industry and are proud to have a great track record with students who chose this path!

Our WORKING STUDENT paid job is FULL TIME including some weekends with flexibility in number of hours per day. Responsibilities include daily barn chores, (feeding/ cleaning/ grooming/ turnout), imprinting of foals and handling of young horses. You will also be assisting our resident veterinarians with routine and emergency health care procedures, breeding work and stallion collections. Significant riding experience in an English discipline (dressage/eventing/hunter and/or jumper) is also paramount to this position, as you will be exercising show horses, and assisting with the training/development of young horses at home with guidance from our farm trainer / riding team. Even though this is a full and dynamic learning experience, candidates must start with a more advanced knowledge base and skill set.

Our summer VOLUNTEER POSITION is PART TIME with a commitment to a minimum of three days a week and some weekends. This position is typically filled by someone who is seeking to further their exposure to and hands on experience around horses. You will be helping out along side our working student, veteran farm employees and farm managers who will be teaching and overseeing you. Duties will be similar to above mentioned for our working student, but riding skills are not required. If desired, there is opportunity for riding lessons and exercising horses depending on experience. Many of our volunteers graduate to paid positions for subsequent jobs at OBF.

Candidates for both positions must display good common sense, have good work ethic, work well with and take direction from others, and be willing to work long hours while maintaining a sense of humor :) A drivers license is required. If needed, we will help students find local accommodations. Our working student position runs from April to September. Exact time frames are dependant upon school schedules. We work hard but have fun and learn a lot doing it!

Please send a resume with previous work experience to support your application and references if possible to horses@ns.sympatico.ca  Salary is dependant on experience.
